The Middle East – The Recordings Of The Middle East (2008)

"The recordings of The Middle East" is a collective of 8 tracks written and recorded by the band over june 2007 through till march 2008. Having been around on and off for a few years they have been producing a diverse form of dreamy indie pop, akin to bands such as anathallo or the lighter moments of mewithoutYou. Drawing influence from all over the place these talented queenslanders consistently manage to produce highly infectious and rather soothing melodies, as they so willingly display on this 8 track release. From start to finish this collection of recordings has a soft wistful sense about it, each track, dynamically unique, moves through various stages of light soulful reflection right through to jarring moments of epic instrumentation. The overall tone can best be described as the moments in between dreams, where youre in that trance like state where you are not asleep but you are not fully awake. Each song whilst unique, maintains this slight sense of levitation, like they were floating above the clouds at each step of the writing process.  The songs move through at a fairly quick rate despite the fact the tracks clock in at an average time of 6 minutes each. Leaving much of the hard work coming across simply as a blur. At times, the sweeping guitars, the heartfelt crooning and the warming percussion all blend into one 8 track melodic movement that always seems to end sooner than you anticipated. But at the same time each song carries its own sense of weight in a different way, almost like the listener, while in a good place, has stopped to think for a minute and reflect on various aspects of their life.

Traci Lords - 1000 Fires (1995)

Traci Lords' first album is a competent exercise in techno, not dance-pop. Throughout "1000 Fires" the beat takes the center stage, with most of the tracks featured just a handful of hooks and thread-bare melodies.
Unlike most techno albums, Traci Lords debut goes beyond simple rave standards and packs an album full of meaningful energy and alot of feeling. It starts off with the hit single 'Control' (from the film "Mortal Kombat") and takes you into a virtual dance wonderland.
"Let me kiss it and make it better," purrs the X-rated vixen turned mainstream actress as she attempts to get a rise out of the techno audience. With writing/production from Babble (ex-Thompson Twins), the KLF's Ben Watkins and Mike Edwards of Jesus Jones, the music is sleek, robotic, and primed for clubbers who'll view her as the camp descendant of disco queen Amanda Lear. "Outlaw Lover" is worthy of Mitsou. The songs inculde hardcore pieces ('Good n' Evil'), soft ballads ('Distant Land'), and even campy tunes ('Okey-Dokey'). Every track is a winner, not one fails to loose your intrest. A standout piece includes 'Father's Field', an emotional account of a painful (and true) experience that happened to Lords.

Queen + Paul Rodgers - Return Of The Champions (2005)

"Return Of The Champions" is a double live album by English rock band Queen + Paul Rodgers.
It was recorded in May 2005 during the Queen + Paul Rodgers Tour at the Hallam FM Arena in Sheffield, England (except for "Imagine", which was performed in Hyde Park, London immediately after that year's terrorist attack) and released on 19 September 2005.
When thinking of suitable replacements for Freddie Mercury in Queen, Paul Rodgers is not a name that immediately leaps to mind. As the former lead singer for Free and Bad Company, Rodgers roughly belongs to the same '70s British hard rock pack as Queen, but Rodgers is pretty much the polar opposite of Mercury: a gruff, bluesy, barrel-chested macho blues-rock belter opposed to Freddie's grandly flamboyant, eccentric glam rock showman.
Yet when Queen or more accurately, Brian May and Roger Taylor, since John Deacon decided to stay retired reunited in 2005, they picked Rodgers as their frontman, perhaps because he was one of the few marquee-level names from the '70s left who wasn't working steadily.
The double-disc "Return Of The Champions" documents their concert at the Hallam FM Arena in Sheffield on May 9, 2005. The set list is pretty heavy on Queen standards, with a few Bad Company and Free songs, such as "Feel Like Makin' Love" and "All Right Now," thrown in for good measure. Queen sounds big, tight, and professional, and there's even a sense of excitement to some of the performances, as if May and Taylor are invigorated to be out on-stage again, playing these songs for an adoring crowd.

Roy Orbison And Friends - A Black And White Night, Live (1989)

"A Black & White Night Live" is a Roy Orbison music album made posthumously by Virgin Records from the HBO television broadcast, Roy Orbison and Friends, "A Black and White Night". The album was released in 1989 and included the songs "Blue Bayou" and "Claudette" that because of time constraints had been deleted from the televised broadcast. On piano is Glen D. Hardin, who had played piano for Buddy Holly as well as for years for Elvis Presley. Lead guitarist James Burton is also from Presley's group. Male background vocals, with some on guitar, are Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, and Steven Soles. Female background vocals are k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt. The show also had a number of celebrities in the audience such as Kris Kristofferson, Billy Idol and Sandra Bernhard. On the other hand, the performances are extremely reverential to the established studio versions of the songs (all of the hits are here), and intended to mimic them, so this isn't quite the same as a live album as it would have been done back when.

Billy Idol - Charmed Life (1990)

By 1990's aptly named "Charmed Life", Billy Idol was seemingly more well-known for his excessive lifestyle than his creative zenith of a few years prior. This made his channeling of Jim Morrison on a rowdy cover of "LA Woman" even more apt. He had done so before, of course, most memorably on 1986's "Whiplash Smile". But where Idol's clever amalgam of dance beats and punky guitar breaks had done its part to define the 1980s, his update of the classic Doors song was the new sound of the same old seedy, City of Angels underbelly, remixed for the cusp of a new decade. Its mirthful screams and bizzaro beat speak ("She drinks my wine spo-dee-o-dee") also marked one of Charmed Life's few memorable moments. "Cradle of Love" was another obvious high point; together with its saucy video the clattering, histrionic single was largely responsible for the LP's platinum status. But Steve Stevens had departed prior to Charmed, taking his pyrotechnic guitar with him, and his absence is certainly felt. The album wallows in mood pieces like the greaser-tinged "Endless Sleep" or the confessional "Prodigal Blues." While the latter cut does feature a surging melody and some great synth textures, its guitar blasts don't ring with the same fervor. Likewise, the fiery soloing of "Right Way" doesn't mesh as well with Idol's vocal or the synthetic-sounding backing track the whole thing is like the classic pieces of a Idol song, disassembled.

Duff McKagan's Loaded - Dark Days (2001)

"Dark Days" is the debut studio album by American hard rock band Loaded,
lead by Duff McKagan, he is best known for his twelve-year tenure as the bassist of the hard rock band Guns N' Roses. The overall vibe of the album has a dark, almost murky atmosphere. Duff has grown in leaps and bounds since his first (undertated) album "Believe in Me."
This album shows how truly talented Duff Mckagan is. Although he was an important member of G-N-R, his presence was overshadowed by the musical geniuses of Axl, Slash, and Izzy. Duff sings lead on this as well as handles bass of course and electric guitar as well as piano. His vocals are very well done and fit this type of music right on target. Speaking on Duff's vocals , Duff always was a decent background vocalist in Guns n Roses.
The songs are all well done and show elements of his punk roots, especially the standout lead track Seattle Head.

Izzy Stradlin & The Ju Ju Hounds - Izzy Stradlin & The Ju Ju Hounds (1992)

"Izzy Stradlin & The Ju Ju Hounds" is the first album by former Guns N' Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin. This is a great, raw and raunchy slice of rock and roll, in the style of The Rolling Stones, and filled with good guitar work from Izzy himself and lead guitarist Rick Richards, formerly of The Georgia Satellites. If you've listened to the track "Dust n' Bones", sung by Izzy on Guns n' Roses' album "Use Your Illusion I", you'll have a pretty good idea what to expect. But still, this is NOT Guns n' Roses revisited, and thank heavens for that! This album is filled with solid, straightforward rock and roll, and Izzy has cultivated a hoarse, nasal vocal style which actually suits the songs pretty well. Izzy Stradlin was never as extrovert or as carismatic as Axl Rose or fellow Guns n' Roses guitarist Slash, but he is a better (and less pretentious) songwriter by far, and this is a truly great, timeless rock and roll album.

Circus - In The Arena (1977)

"In The Arena" is an album from the group Circus. Bernie Millar: Vocals, Bones Brettell: Keyboards, Gary van Zyl: Bass, Sandy Robbie: Guitar , Wally Cullis: Drums and Glenda Hyam: castanets on 'Conquistador'.
They were one of the most exciting live progressive rock bands of the mid 70's. In lead singer Bernie Miller the group had a showman that rivaled Jagger, Freddy Mercury etc... add some of the hottest players in the country and some great songs like "Speed Queen", "Long legged lady" and their heartstopping version of "Conquistador" and you get an album that 26 years later still sounds as majestic as it did back then.
They sound like some kinda combination of Queen, Jethro Tull, Kansas and early Styx with "Michelle" being the heaviest tune and favorite.

Wilco - A Ghost Is Born (2004)

"A Ghost Is Born" is the fifth studio album by Chicago-based alternative rock band Wilco. It features singer Jeff Tweedy on lead guitar more than any previous Wilco album.
It is the Wilco album with the strongest stylistic link to its immediate predecessor, as if their new fans are being given a moment to catch up. The languid, ghostly song structures, the periodic forays into dissonance, and the pained, hesitant vocals from Jeff Tweedy that were so much a part of this album. "A Ghost Is Born" is considerably warmer and more organic; the extended instrumental breaks in several of the songs (two cuts are over ten minutes long) sound more like a group in full flight.
And while Wilco's former secret weapon, Jay Bennett, is now out of the picture, the rest of the group (especially multi-instrumentalist Leroy Bach, keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen, and guitarist/co-producer Jim O'Rourke) fill the gaps with admirable grace and strength. If "A Ghost Is Born" has a flaw, it's in the songwriting; while this album is a "grower" if there ever was one, revealing more of its unexpected complexities with each spin, there are no songs here as immediately engaging as "War on War," "Heavy Metal Drummer," or "I'm the Man Who Loves You" from YHF, and while "Hummingbirds," "Handshake Drugs," and "Wishful Thinking" are tuneful and charming, they lack the resonance and emotional impact of Tweedy's strongest work. And the album's most purely enjoyable tune, the witty "The Late Greats," closes out the disc after the 15-minute drone dirge of "Less Than You Think," dramatically blunting its effectiveness. "A Ghost Is Born" confirms what old fans and recent converts already know that Wilco is one of America's most interesting and imaginative bands and it's brave and compelling listening.

Track List

01.  At Least That's What You Said – 5:33
02.  Hell Is Chrome (Tweedy, Jorgensen) – 4:38

Nine Inch Nails - Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D (Year Zero Remixed) (2007)

"Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D" is a remix album from Nine Inch Nails. It Includes tracks from the 2007 CD "Year Zero". It includes such remixers as Saul Williams, Ladytron, The Faint and The Knife.
Slightly half a year after the release of "Year Zero," (2007) Trent Reznor has released an album of remixes for that album.
"Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D" is a little different from past NIN remix albums in that several other artists were brought in to remix individual songs. Each artist, such as Ladytron, the Faint, Saul Williams, Stephen Morris & Gillian Gilbert etc, put their own unique spin on the songs, so each track sounds pretty unique from the one that preceded it, yet everything works and it makes for a very interesting listen. The result is a remix album that sounds like a bunch of artists screwed around with "Year Zero," warped it, and then put it back together. Because several different artists stylized each song uniquely, "Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D" is always taking twists and turns, and one never knows where one will wind up. And while some remix songs are rather tedious, every track on "Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D" is thoroughly engrossing, and I say that as someone who generally doesn't like remixes.

Charlie - Fantasy Girls (1976)

The jazz-inflected, London-based group Charlie was as well known for the sexy babes on their album covers as they were for their close, smooth harmonies and slick, catchy singles like "Turning" and "Watching TV." The band's core lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist Terry Thomas (who had also been in a band with Free and Bad Company's Simon Kirke), bassist/vocalist John Anderson (formerly of Axe), and drummer Steve Gadd, and a wide array of supporting players, including keyboardist Julian Colbeck, guitarist Martin Smith, auxiliary drummer Shep Lonsdale, and former Argent members Bob Henrit and John Verity. Their radio-friendly sound debuted in 1976 with "Fantasy Girls" and the group managed a steady stream of moderate FM hits in the U.S.  The guitars are compressed and the arrangements are quite similar to their contemporaries, specifically that of Boston (especially on "Miss Deluxe"), but the quality on this ten-song session is erratic at best and shows a group just starting to get its footing and identity together. To Charlie's credit, they take bits and pieces of their contemporaries and take only what really works, but when listened to as a whole, "Fantasy Girls" can be inconsistent but wonderful for those looking for no-frills rock & roll.

Roger McGuinn - Thunderbyrd (1977)

"Thunderbyrd" is American singer-songwriter and guitarist Roger McGuinn's 5th solo studio album, released in 1977 on the Columbia Records label. Following the success of his 1976 album "Cardiff Rose", McGuinn intended to make another album in collaboration with its producer Mick Ronson. This project however never materialized. Instead he put together a new band, "Thunderbyrd", and recorded this album with them.
The album contains four original compositions by McGuinn and his old songwriting collaborator Jacques Levy.
It also includes a version of Tom Petty's "American Girl", originally a hit the year before from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers's eponymous debut album. The lack of air play and attention left this truely fine album without much of an audiance. It opens with a tastier version of Peter Frampton's "All Night Long" and closes with a moody "Russian Hill" that evokes the past much like Led Zeppelin's "Ten Years Gone".

Track List

1.  "All Night Long" (Peter Frampton, Gallagher) – 4:19
2.  "It's Gone" (Jacques Levy, Roger McGuinn) – 3:57

ZZ Top - XXX (1999)

"XXX" is the 13th studio album by American blues rock band ZZ Top, released in 1999. This album celebrates the 30th anniversary of the band. The live track, "Sinpusher", is an altered version of their 1994 song "Pincushion" with different lyrics and a slightly heavier guitar riff. The album ends with four tracks that were recorded live but sound as processed as the eight studio cuts that precede them. There is no grit, no sensuality to the music, no propulsion in the rhythm, and no joy to the playing. Even when the band stretches out, they feel tightly wound, and there is no spark to Billy Gibbons' guitar playing. If there was, maybe the three-chord shuffle of "Poke Chop Sandwich" would feel right, instead of a bastardized, emasculated knock-off of "Pearl Neckless." But there is nothing to the songs and nothing to the performances. Ironically, ZZ Top doesn't follow the advice they offer in "Fearless Boogie": they're too scared of sounding organic to really let loose and boogie, or play the blues like the accomplished veterans they are.

The New Cactus Band - Son Of Cactus (1973)

The New Cactus Band, led by Duane Hitchings, released one album "Son Of Cactus" and featured nobody of the original Cactus. Mike Pinera, formerly of Blues Image and Iron Butterfly, came in on guitar, along with Roland Robinson on bass and Jerry Norris on drums. The band then toured live in the Midwest and on the East Coast in mid 1973 with Captain Beyond drummer Bobby Caldwell and former Gregg Allman bass player Charlie Souza. The New Cactus Band soon disbanded. In the late '70s Rusty Day formed another version of Cactus in Orlando, where he had relocated. This version of Cactus featured Steve Dansby on guitar, Dan Keylon and later John Sauter on bass, Frankie Robbins and later Gary Moffatt on drums. Frankie Robbins' brother Dennis along with Dan Keylon also played with the Rockets and Jim McCarty. On March 6, 1982, Rusty Day died from gunshots as a victim of a drug deal gone bad.

Mark Knopfler - The Ragpicker´s Dream (2002)

"The Ragpicker's Dream" is Mark Knopfler's third solo, released in 2002. It is a collection of songs written from the point of view of poor but dignified itinerant men, struggling to get by in life, often enjoying small triumphs. Knopfler does not play the acoustic guitar as much as he used to, but gives a folk imprint to the whole album. The first song, "Why Aye Man", was used as the theme tune for the third series of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet which first aired in 2002 and the album contains numerous other references to North East England, including the village of Tow Law on "Hill Farmer's Blues".
The memorable riffage that fueled Dire Straits' most radio-friendly material has been discarded for a more pastoral approach, making this a perfect album for a rainy Sunday morning. Like his Notting Hillbillies side project, it isn't entirely unplugged, yet there is an emphasis on acoustic accompaniment to its predominantly ballad slant. Instead of leaving space for traditional soloing, Knopfler weaves his snake-like guitar between the words. This infuses a tense, edgy quality in even the most bucolic tracks, resulting in the crackling but still low-boil atmospherics of "Hill Farmer's Blues" and "Fare Thee Well Northumberland." "Marbletown" is an unaccompanied folk/blues that sounds as if Knopfler was born and raised in the Mississippi backwoods. He taps into the patented insistent lazy, shuffling groove on the spooky "You Don't Know You're Born." It's the most Straits-like track here featuring an extended, winding, yet subtle solo. "Coyote," a mid-tempo sizzler -- lyrically based on the Road Runner cartoons -- is propelled by a walking bass figure and Knopfler's homey, lived-in, talk-sung vocals. Again, the guitar pyrotechnics are interspersed throughout the verses with overdubbed sounds employed to provide ambiance and mood. The authentic honky tonk swing of "Daddy's Gone to Knoxville" could have come off a Wayne Hancock album, and the "King of the Road" melody from "Quality Shoe" is a tribute to Roger Miller. As an homage to the American roots music he's always admired and a desire to retreat further from the stadium rock of his Straits days, The Ragpicker's Dream is a restrained success, at least on its own terms.

Reo Speedwagon - Good Trouble (1983)

"Good Trouble" is the tenth studio album by REO Speedwagon, released in 1982 as a follow up to "Hi Infidelity".
Where "Hi Infidelity" perfectly balanced the muscle of REO's '70s stuff with wads of bankable bubblegum, here, lead single "Keep the Fire Burning" signals a decent into generic; but much of "Good Trouble" plays out a rocking and rollicking good time, fighting off mediocrity. First off, bassist Bruce Hall comes to the fore twice (usually once) and delivers two knockouts: "Girl With the Heart of Gold" and "Let's Be-Bop." As always, Neal Doughty's keys spruce up the works; "I'll Follow You" features his sublime touch as well as sizzling Richrath axe-kicking behind a dusty, lusty Texas café tale. Coup de grâce "The Key" unlocks a commercial paradox: a transcendent tapestry housed in a homogenized humdinger, as Kev Cronin bellows questions about what he knows and sees, yearning for the answer locked within himself. But only he can set it free; only he has the key.

Santana Brothers – Santana Brothers (1994)

Santana Brothers (sometimes credited as simply Brothers) is a 1994 album by Carlos Santana, his brother Jorge, and his nephew Carlos Hernandez. Carlos joins brother Jorge (ex-Malo) and young nephew Carlos Hernandez in a six-string summit that puts the three guitarists in all-instrumental solo, duo and trio settings. Santana fans frustrated by the band’s invariably lame vocalists will eat up the Abraxis-style Latin blues of “Luz Amor y Vida” and the instrumental duel on “Brujo.”
This was released in 1994, before Santana would go on a 5 year recording break and then resurrect his career with Supernatural. It is 52 minutes long and the sound quality is excellent. Except for one track, this is an instrumental album. The best stuff on this album is driven by Jorge Santana. The album starts out great and ends great. It is powerful, slightly hard latin rock. There is a little discordant jazz mixed in. It is similar to the sound of “Caravanserai”, “Welcome” and “Borbarella” days.

Track List

01. Transmutation/Industrial (Santana, Santana) – 6:13
02. Thoughts (Hernandez) - 2:51

Mother Love Bone – Mother Love Bone (1992)

It wasn’t death but life that brought Mother Love Bone to the attention of the world in the end. Andrew Wood’s premature passing was a personal tragedy to all who knew him and to the band’s hometown fanbase, but the group had barely made a mark beyond the Shine EP, and Apple was less a debut album than a memorial. But when Seattle’s music took over the commercial stratosphere, with Gossard and Ament steering Pearl Jam to undreamed-of heights, it was inevitable that a re-release would occur — something further confirmed when “Crown of Thorns” became one of the many radio hits from the soundtrack to Singles. For all the after-the-fact money-making thanks to Polygram, about the only thing that makes it a rip-off to the earlier fans is the inclusion of one unreleased track — “Lady Godiva Blues,” which sounds more than a little like one of the Cult’s neo-boogie efforts circa Electric. Wood certainly has Ian Astbury’s gift of gab and vocal projection, though it’s likely Rick Rubin would have recorded the guitars a lot more forcefully; either way, it’s not essential for those who have everything else already. For newcomers, though, this collection is all that is needed, compiling as it does the full contents of both Shine and Apple into one package. The second disc only contains the Shine take of “Capricorn Sister” and “Lady Godiva Blues” itself; given the presence of numerous demos on bootlegs, including a version of Argent’s “Hold Your Head Up,” it seems a lot more could have been added. It’s a fairly minor quibble, though, given all the fine music, whether it’s the stomp of “Holy Roller” and “Half Ass Monkey Boy” or the fragile beauty of “Stargazer” and “Crown of Thorns.” Ament’s amusing but heartfelt liner notes, complete lyrics, and a slew of pictures of Mother Love Bone memorabilia help round out the release.

Johnny Cash – American IV: The Man Comes Around (2002)

Johnny Cash’s fourth project with producer Rick Rubin continues on the same path as many of their previous releases: Cash’s warm and rumbling baritone over minimal production and gentle duets with some surprising guests. One of the things that sets American IV: The Man Comes Around apart from the others is Cash’s song selections. The success he experienced with his previous interpretations of contemporary songwriters (Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage,” Nick Cave’s “The Mercy Seat”) is applied to this album with varying degrees of success. His throaty reading of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” easily fits into his “Man in Black” persona, and the spiritual conviction underlying Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” is certainly powerful. Unfortunately, the inclusion of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (featuring a lost-sounding Fiona Apple) and a passionless snooze through the Beatles’ “In My Life” should have been so much stronger (given the subject matter of both songs and Cash’s prolific life story). One of the reasons his previous covers were so successful is that in the past he had chosen some pretty obscure songs (Bonnie Prince Billy’s “I See a Darkness” and Beck’s “Rowboat,” to name a couple) and reinterpreted them with his unique perspective and unmistakable voice. However, there is really no need to hear his versions of the Irish standard “Danny Boy” or the clunky rendition of Sting’s “I Hung My Head,” since something about them just doesn’t fit — either Cash wasn’t entirely comfortable with the song or the performance was never fully realized. Luckily, the new songs Cash wrote for the album are pretty strong, and his cover of the standard “We’ll Meet Again” is among the best versions of the song ever recorded. It is a relief to hear that, although Cash’s voice is clearly older and not the booming powerhouse it was in the earlier Sun and Columbia days, he’s still got some punch left in him, and the wisdom he’s gained in his later life seeps through between the grooves, revealing a man who has lived through it all and lived to tell the tale.

Peter Gabriel – Plays Live (1983)

“Plays Live” is the first live and fifth album by British rock musician Peter Gabriel.
Although he had thrived on live performance as a member of Genesis, Peter Gabriel waited until he was four albums and six years deep into his solo career with the hit album “Security” and the Top 40 “Shock the Monkey” chalked up to his credit before he took the plunge into concert recording with this album. Released as a double-LP and two-CD set this is a fine summing up of the artist’s early solo years. Most of his biggest hits and key album tracks are represented in tight, inspired performances the notes concede that some of what is here was sweetened after the fact in the studio, but the immediacy of the stage performances wasn’t lost in the process, and that emotional edge and intimacy give songs such as “Solsbury Hill,” “I Don’t Remember,” and “Shock the Monkey” a sharper, deeper resonance than their studio renditions, fine as those are. It’s that side of the performance that makes this release well worth owning, for anyone enamored of Gabriel’s voice or songs, even if nothing here wholly supplants the studio originals. And the band Tony Levin (bass, stick, backing vocals), Jerry Marotta (drums, vocals), David Rhodes (guitar, vocals), and Larry Fast (keyboards) is in excellent form as well. What is lacking is the cohesiveness that one might have gotten from a live album assembled from a single concert; derived from a multitude of shows, the individual songs are excellent unto themselves, but there’s little sense (or even the illusion) from song to song of any forward momentum across the album, and that might be the one major flaw here. But this is a suitable capstone to the first phase of Gabriel’s solo career, and also a peculiar one in certain respects given the effort that obviously went into assembling the album, the packaging is almost minimalist by the standards of live albums and double albums of the era.

The Doobie Brothers - Sibling Rivalry (2000)

"Sibling Rivalry" is the twelfth studio album by American rock band The Doobie Brothers, released in 2000. The first release since the tepid reception afforded 1990's Brotherhood, founding members Johnston, Patrick Simmons, and Keith Knudsen do a lushly produced retread of the denim-friendly, early-'70s SoCal of "The Captain and Me" and "Toulouse Street." There is plenty of up-with-life lyrics, spacey sound effects, and some truly lovely harmonizing on the lead single "People Gotta Love Again" and "Leave My Heartache Behind." The more relaxed "Jericho" takes a page from Lowell George's book of plaintive, southwestern funk, while "Don't be Afraid" was so tailor-made for McDonald's incomparable, faux-tortured soprano that to listen to Simmon's muted vocals pick through it is like watching a man struggle with an oversized coat. It's all been done before, of course, but the whole thing is so lovingly crafted and gee-whiz positive that you can't help coming away from a couple of listens snapping your fingers.

The Music - The Music (2002)

Without a nerve, the Music arrived in America shortly after the Vines hype of 2002 had simmered down. But unlike their Aussie chart mates, the four boys from Leeds waltzed in with raw confidence. It was about the music, pure and simple. Their name made it obvious, and their infectious, brash sound proved it tenfold. The Music, whose members were on the cusp of their twenties, constructed material that’s not only aware of what the band is like sonically, but also keenly resistant to then-current post-grunge flair. The bombast of ’60s psychedelia were woven around; glazed techno bits give a vibrant overtone to the album itself, and the flurry of manic musical bliss is almost immediate. Such a task is impractical to pull off on a first album, however. The Verve’s earlier singles — “All in the Mind” and “Gravity Grave” — maneuvered such a move, and remarkably so, but the Music do it with a lesser degree of cockiness. Frontman Robert Harvey is a near vocal double for Geddy Lee, a matchless prospect for guitarist Adam Nutter. Together, the two are a dynamic pair, roaring and rollicking on “Take the Long Road and Walk It.” The unwashed sexiness of “Human” builds upon that formula, maintaining a powerful instrumentation while designing an artsy lyrical stance. Like Richard Ashcroft, the Music seek a simple purpose, which is to love and find a good, solid place. Harvey’s muddled vocals twist and moan throughout the white-hot “Float”; “The People” is certainly driving with its political coup de foudre, and rock’s most basic emotions are heavy. The Music don’t necessarily wish to start a fight, but they’re tough in staying individualists in an effort to comfortably embrace a chosen path. “You’re love is finding a better way/Everybody wants you to know,” from the blistering electronic haze of “Getaway,” is a testament to that, and “The Truth Is No Words” follows suit. For a debut album, the Music have managed to take passion to another level, and it’s much more stylish than what the Hives, the Vines, and the Strokes have done. They’re serious with their craft. Reaching for a spiritual haven is a touch overdone, but it works this time. The Music is an incredible debut and a brilliant example of where rock could be headed.

Ryan Adams - Gold (2001)

“Gold” is the second studio album by Ryan Adams, released September 25, 2001.
One would think that being Ryan Adams would be a pretty good deal at the time of this album’s release; he had a major-label deal, critics were in love with him, he got to date Winona Ryder and Alanis Morissette, Elton John went around telling everyone he was a genius, and his record company gave him carte blanche to do whatever he wanted. But to listen to Gold, Adams’ first solo album for his big-league sponsors at Lost Highway, one senses that there are about a dozen other musicians Adams would love to be, and nearly all of them were at their peak in the early to mid-’70s. Adams’ final album with Whiskeytown, Pneumonia, made it clear that he was moving beyond the scruffy alt-country of his early work, and Gold documents his current fascination with ’70s rock. Half the fun of the album is playing “Spot the Influence”: “Answering Bell” is a dead ringer for Van Morrison (with fellow Morrison enthusiast Adam Duritz on backing vocals), “Tina Toledo’s Street Walkin’ Blues” is obviously modeled on the Rolling Stones, “Harder Now That It’s Over” sounds like Harvest-period Neil Young, “New York, New York” resembles Stephen Stills in his livelier moments (Stephen’s son, Chris Stills, plays on the album), and “Rescue Blues” and “La Cienega Just Smiled” suggest the influence of Adams’ pal Elton John. Of course, everyone has their influences, and Adams seems determined to make the most of them on Gold; it’s a far more ambitious album than his solo debut, Heartbreaker. The performances are polished, Ethan Johns’ production is at once elegant and admirably restrained, Adams is in strong voice throughout, and several of the songs are superb, especially the swaggering but lovelorn “New York, New York,” the spare and lovely “When the Stars Go Blue,” and the moody closer, “Goodnight, Hollywood Blvd.” But while Gold sounds like a major step forward for Adams in terms of technique, it lacks the heart and soul of Heartbreaker or Pneumonia; the album seems to reflect craft rather than passion, and while it’s often splendid craft, the fire that made Whiskeytown’s best work so special isn’t evident much of the time. Gold sounds like an album that could win Ryan Adams a lot of new fans (especially with listeners whose record collections go back a ways), but longtime fans may be a bit put off by the album’s richly crafted surfaces and emotionally hollow core.

Soundtrack - (500) Days Of Summer (2009)

The romantic comedy “(500) Days of Summer” starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph-Gordon Levitt is a film that has garnered quite a bit of attention due to its music featuring many classic hits from The Smiths, Hall & Oates, Simon & Garfunkel but also contemporary hits from artists such as Regina Spektor, Meaghan Smith and even a track by Deschanel’s band She & Him. The “(500) Days of Summer” soundtrack kicks off with a short instrumental track by Mychael Danna and Rob Simons titled “A Story of Boy Meets Girl” and transitions to Regina Spektor’s whimsical piano/violin driven-track “Us”. The soundtrack also features Spektor’s all-piano based track “Hero”. The soundtrack features a good diversity of musical tracks which include the mesmerizing, depressing but yet one of my favorite songs from The Smiths – “There is a Light That Never Goes Out” by the Smiths and “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I want” (which was featured on the 80′s soundtrack “Pretty in Pink”). The fourth track “Bad Kids” is courtesy of flower-punk band Black Lips which has a musical flair and humor in its lyrics which for me, the track was reminiscent of The Ramones. While the sixth track “There Goes the Fear” features an alternative mid-tempo rock track which features dreamy guitars.
The seventh” track is the classic Hall & Oates hit “You Make My Dreams”, an awesome song but an 80′s track that offsets the musical consistency of the soundtrack. The eighth track “Sweet Disposition” comes from the popular Australian band, The Temper Trap (which was featured on the abc Family finale of “Greek” (Season 2) and Australian TV show “Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities”. The ninth track “Quelqu’un M’a Dit” comes from popular singer/model and First Lady of France Carla Bruni (wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy). The acoustic guitar track lends its romantic imprint on the soundtrack.
The tenth track “Mushaboom” is an earlier but still enjoyable hit song by the popular Canadian singer-songwriter, Feist and comes from her 2004 album “Let It Die”. The 12th track is a short song titled “Bookends” by music legends Simon & Garfunkel (from the duo’s 1968 chart topping album “Bookends”). The 13th track “Vagabonds” comes from Australian rock band, Wolfmother and sports a little of their 60′s psychedelic rock and 90′s rock influence. While the 14th track “She’s Got You High” brings a catchy UK rock feel by the defunct band Mumm-ra. The song was one of the band’s hits from 2007 from their popular album “These Things Move in Threes” (their first and final full-length album).
The 15th track “Here Comes Your Man” by Meaghan Smith which gives her angelic vocal and musical spin to the 1989 hit song originally by The Pixies. The soundtrack ends with She & Him’s (which is an Indie folk and featuring actress Zooey Deschanel and musician M. Ward) version of The Smiths “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want”.

Cheap Trick - Sex, America, Cheap Trick (4CD Box Set) (1996)

"Sex, America, Cheap Trick" is a 1996 box set by the rock band Cheap Trick. It includes 17 previously unreleased songs, as well as the band's biggest hits. It is a classic example of a botched box set. Spanning four discs and 64 songs, the box contains nearly all of the group's hit singles and an amazing amount of rarities -- a grand total of 30 outtakes, live tracks, demos, single versions, soundtrack songs, and B-sides. Despite all of the abundance of material, there are still a lot of essential items missing, as well as several odd inclusions. Many of the group's biggest hits and concert staples are present, but Cheap Trick classics like "He's a Whore," "Downed," "Come On, Come On," "Taxman, Mr. Thief," "California Man," and several others are inexplicably absent. Furthermore, the final two discs bog down with slick radio-ready pop, even though they rescue all the highlights from the band's decidedly uneven '80s recordings. Still, the rarities -- particularly single versions of early tracks like "Oh, Candy" and "Southern Girls," demos like "Fan Club," and a ripping live set -- are usually worthy, even if they might have been better showcased on a double-disc rarities set.
Recorded between 1977 and 1995. Includes liner notes by Ira Robbins and Bruce Dickinson.
Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
This bonus-laden four-disc boxed set is a dream come true for Cheap Trick fans, and catches latecomers up with the best of the power pop juggernaut's work through 1996. It features not only their pop-canon classics ("Surrender," "I Want You to Want Me") but also alternate takes, b-sides, unreleased tracks, and several live performances. Additionally, former TROUSER PRESS editor-in-chief Ira Robbins and producer Bruce Dickinson provide informative liner notes.

Al Stewart - Beach Full Of Shells (2005)

"A Beach Full Of Shells" is the seventeenth album by Al Stewart, released in 2005. Like most of Stewart's later works, much of the content of the CD alludes to people or moments in history. Al Stewart has always had a distinctive vocal style -- making his radio hits like "Year of the Cat" immediately recognizable -- while also possessing a knack for writing tuneful pop songs. A Beach Full of Shells qualifies as his first U.S. release since 1995, and while it's been some time since the singer conquered the pop charts, both his vocal style and craftsmanship remains intact. It would be a mistake, however, to view Stewart as no more than the maker of pop confections specially designed for a mass radio audience. The cover of A Beach Full of Shells offers the first clue of a playful mind that enjoys the weight of words: there are two types of shells on the beach, one from the sea, the other for use in a gun. The complexity of his approach is best experienced on "Somewhere in England 1915," a lengthy song (nearly seven minutes) with shifting dream imagery. Weaving fantasy with brief references to World War I, the narrator eventually wakes up 90 years later to find himself on the edge -- the song seems to suggest -- of yet another war. Stewart accomplishes all of this without ever being obvious, giving the song a subtle quality as it reveals its surprises to the listener. This, however, is only one of many moods on A Beach Full of Shells. "Katherine of Oregon" is as light as air, a pleasant, flowing ballad with nice acoustic guitar and light percussion, while "Mona Lisa Talking" shifts through a number of intriguing chord changes to offer a little common sense advice. Stewart originally wrote the song "Class of '58" as 13 minutes long. When the record company rejected it, he rewrote it to the truncated 4-minute version on the album.[citation needed] The long version was subsequently released as a single. In the blurb on the single, it is suggested that the album A Beach Full of Shells was originally intended to focus around this song, which describes the life of a musician on the 1950s rock and roll scene.

The J. Geils Band - "Live" Full House (1972)

"Live" Full House is the third album by American rock band The J. Geils Band, released in 1972. The J. Geils Band made many fine, sometimes great, studio albums but where they really captured their full, thrilling potential was on the concert stage. Most live albums tend to be a poor excuse for actually being at the show in question, but the Geils Band's live albums jump out of the speakers with so much joy, fun, and unquenchable rock & roll spirit that you might as well be there. "Live" Full House was their first live record, and it is a blast from start to finish. Recorded in 1972 at Detroit's Cinderella Ballroom, the group runs through songs from their first two albums, The J. Geils Band and The Morning After, kicking out the jams on rockers like the Motown chestnut "First I Look at the Purse," Otis Rush's "Homework," and one of the group's first self-penned classics, "Hard Drivin' Man," as well as positively scorching through an incredible version of John Lee Hooker's dark and evil blues "Serves You Right to Suffer." It's easy to overlook J. Geils himself on guitar when you have a magnetic frontman like Peter Wolf or the unstoppable force that is harp player Magic Dick (check "Whammer Jammer" for proof of his greatness), but his soloing on this track serves notice that he could tear off a ferocious solo with the best of them. "Live" Full House is a short, punchy shot of rock & roll genius by one of the great bands of the '70s and one of the best live albums ever recorded.

01. "First I Look at the Purse" (Robert Rogers) – 3:56
02. "Homework" (Dave Clark, Al Perkins, Otis Rush) – 2:34
