Barbra Streisand - Duets (2002)

 posted by all-musicrecords

Duets is a compilation album by American singer Barbra Streisand, released on November 26, 2002, by Columbia Records. The collection features nineteen duets from Streisand's career, including two newly recorded ones: "I Won't Be the One to Let Go" with Barry Manilow and "All I Know of Love" with Josh Groban
The Manilow duet was released as the album's lead single on November 4, 2002, as a streaming-only exclusive for AOL Music website members.

Streisand and her manager Jay Landers were executive producers for the compilation. Music critics highlighted the album's duets with Ray Charles, Judy Garland, and Frank Sinatra. Commercially, the album peaked within the top ten of record charts in Denmark and the Netherlands; it also entered the Billboard 200 at number 38 and became certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments of 500,000 copies. Duets has gone on to sell 1.5 million records worldwide.

Streisand and Columbia Records released two compilation albums in 2002: the first being The Essential Barbra Streisand, a greatest hits collection largely consisting of the singer's top-ten and top-forty hits, followed by Duets, a compilation of nineteen duets from her music catalog.
Fourteen out of the album's nineteen tracks were originally featured on previous Streisand studio albums.
The singer included three songs originally performed for other artist's projects: "I've Got a Crush on You" with Frank Sinatra initially appeared on his 1993 Duets album; her rendition of "Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead" with Harold Arlen first appeared on the 1966 studio album Harold Sings Arlen (With Friend); her medley of "Get Happy / Happy Days Are Here Again" with Judy Garland was originally performed live on The Judy Garland Show in 1963.
While eighteen of the album's songs are duets with other musicians, Streisand's medley of "One Less Bell to Answer / A House Is Not a Home" is a duet with herself, first released on the 1971 album Barbra Joan Streisand.
Streisand recorded two new tracks for the album: "I Won't Be the One to Let Go" with Barry Manilow and "All I Know of Love" with Josh Groban. The former track was written by Richard Marx and Manilow, while the latter was written by David Foster and Linda Thompson.
"I Won't Be the One to Let Go" was released as the album's lead and only single on November 4, 2002, as an exclusive download for AOL Music website members.
Although the track was not released commercially, "I Won't Be the One to Let Go" was distributed as a promotional CD single on January 6, 2003. With the release handled by Columbia Records, the CD was sent exclusively to United States radio stations and includes the "Radio Version Edit" and "Radio Version" releases of the song.

Within Temptation - Mother Earth (2000)

posted by all-musicrecords

Mother Earth is the second studio album by Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation. Originally released on 24 December 2000 in the Netherlands, and 21 August 2001 in other parts of Europe.
By 1999 the band had built their own studio and had begun recording demos for the Mother Earth album there. The album itself was recorded in Studio RS29 in Waalwijk, the Netherlands.
Oscar Holleman, who had produced and engineered The Dance, was again producer and one of the sound engineers was Stephen van Haestregt, future drummer for the band.
Sharon recalls that "I had a day for each song, which is still not very much, but you can try out things. We also did some demos before the recordings, so there you can check if you like or dislike parts of a song, and so you have more time when it comes to recording". Ayreon's Arjen Lucassen provided the guitar solo for the track "Dark Wings".

The sound of Mother Earth was a departure for the band. According to Robert Westerholt, the album was a natural progression of their first album Enter, as the band didn't want to release the same kind of music twice.
As a result, they opted to make the songs on a faster tempo and change the tone of the lyrics. In a 2008 interview with Faceculture, den Adel states that Mother Earth was "a little bit older, a little bit more knowledgeable about how we wanted to sound, even then, of course you grow, so we had a better picture of how we wanted to sound.
We didn't want to have the grunt vocals anymore. We felt like everyone was using that as a gimmick, and we didn't want to have it in our music anymore because of that...and also we were very much enthralled by a movie at that time, Braveheart, which was very Celtic, and that's how our album became very Celtic because we were so in love with the soundtrack of the Braveheart movie. So inspired by that, the album came out that way...I still love that album very much...it came together in a very natural way.
The songs were sometimes written in a day, it did take time to work it out more, the way it sounded in the end, but it was like the ideas and the whole concepts of certain songs were written mostly in one day, the chorus and the verses."

According to Metal Injection, the album critical and commercial success can be attributed to the combination of its musical ambiance and the imagery the band presented at that time, citing the landscapes from the Mother Earth music video as an example of the great blend between their musical style and visual presentation. Louder Sound also pointed the bombastic and cinematic characteristics present on the album, highlighting the use of synthesizers and strings
Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad pointed the visual aspect of the concerts at that time as another contributing factor to the growing popularity of the band, as the stage decoration, the band members outfits and the use of pyrotechnics suited well the epic aspect of their sound and lyrics.

Santana - Lotus In Columbia (1973) (2-records) bootleg

posted by all-musicrecords

Recorded live at Carolina University Coliseum, Columbia, SC
March 8, 1973…Bootleg.

Lotus is a 1974 live album by the Latin rock band Santana, recorded at the Osaka Kōsei Nenkin Kaikan, Osaka, Japan in July 1973, during their Caravanserai Tour
"Lotus" is the first live album release by US Jazz rock/fusion act Santana. The album was recorded on the 3rd and 4th of July 1973 in Osaka, Japan and released through Colombia records in May 1974.
The original vinyl version (which was meant to be a Japanese only release) is a trible vinyl release.
The song selection comes from the albums "Abraxas (1970)", "Santana 3 (1971)", "Caravanserai (1972)" and "Welcome (1973)".
The music on the album is focused on the instrumental jazz rock/fusion songs from the band´s discography while the already few vocal based tracks in the discography are even fewer on "Lotus".
The most famous of the latter type "Black Magic Woman" is of course featured though. The musicianship is outstanding on the album.
