Toni Tennille - All Of Me (1987)

posted by all-musicrecords

Cathryn Antoinette "Toni" Tennille (born May 8, 1940) is an American singer-songwriter and keyboardist. A contralto, she is best known as one-half of the 1970s duo Captain & Tennille with her former husband Daryl Dragon; their signature song is "Love Will Keep Us Together".
Tennille also did musical work independently of Dragon, including solo albums and session work.

Before you even open "All Of Me", Toni Tennille's sophomore solo set, you'll be dazzled by the cover art--especially if you are fortunate enough to nab it in LP form.
Tennille never looked sexier, more gorgeous, or more "come-hither-y" than she does here (don't miss the back cover of Toni in leather and stiletto heels). And what's behind that cover does not disappoint.
"All Of Me" is essentially "More Thank You Know, Book 2". It blasts out of the chute like a bucking bronco with her rendition of "How High The Moon", Andrews Sisters-style, and never looks back.
The only thing I didn't love about this album was "Dream". I know--this version is much more true to the original in tempo and styling than C&T's version on their album of the same name... but wasn't that a luscious way to end that album? Truth be told, "All Of Me" would have garnered 5 stars had its predecessor not been as amazing as it was. A definite "must" for Tennille-philes!

The Star Sisters - Danger (1985+1998 Bonus Tracks)

Naast Danger brengen zij van dit album ook de singles He's the 1 (I love), Just another night (in New York City) en The duke of dance uit.

Frankie Valli - Closeup (1975)

posted by all-musicrecords

Closeup is an album by Frankie Valli, released in February 1975 on the Private Stock label.
It had been seven years since his prior album, and afforded Valli his first of two number-one solo hits in the US (in addition to five as lead singer of The Four Seasons).
The LP reached number 51 on the U.S. Billboard albums chart.
The album contains two hit singles: “My Eyes Adored You” (US No. 1) and “Swearin’ to God” (US No. 6).It also contains Valli’s original version of “I Can’t Live a Dream,” which became a hit for the Osmond Brothers in late 1976.

Closeup is singer Frankie Valli again finding the magic without his Four Seasons, this time in the ’70s with two big hits in two different genres.
The album is very, very good, and in a roundabout way is a great example of why Clive Davis worked wonders with Bell Records when he turned it into Arista. Former Bell president Larry Uttal had it all in this project, and it should have been much, much bigger — it should have been the album to firmly establish Private Stock Records as a major player.
But for all the incredible cast members and all the artistry here — Jim Keltner on drums, Bobbye Hall on conga, Clydie King and Patti Austin on backing vocals (seven years before Austin’s own number one hit), and the brilliant idea of having Four Season Bob Gaudio producing half the album in Los Angeles with Val Garay engineering while Bob Crewe produced the hits in New York City with Michael Delugg on the boards (and Charles Calelo arranging on both coasts) — it is all packaged with a cover that looks like it was thought up at the budget label Pickwick International, and with only eight songs it just feels on the surface like less than what it actually is.
The ten-minute version of “Swearin’ to God” is certainly fun, but the 18 minutes for three songs on side two go by too quickly.
They are also the best songs on the album, all produced by Crewe. A couple of additional titles, perhaps a special remake or two, could have made this album so much more for the artist, for the label, for the fans. “My Eyes Adored You” was the first number one solo hit for Valli, and hard to believe it came eight years after “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”
That 1967 hit just missed the number one spot, and a new rendition for this album would actually have been a very wise move.
All of Valli’s first six Top 40 solo hits were produced by Crewe, and hearing the different sounds he and Gaudio came up with for the veteran singer is half the fun of the album. “In My Eyes” is just an excellent album track, unmatched by anything on the first side.
Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, producers of the Toys, show up here as songwriters, as does Kenny Nolan, on an album where easy listening ballads meet disco. The song “Why” is producer Gaudio’s best moment, followed by “He Sure Blessed You,” another decent middle-of-the-road album track. Gaudio should have come up with a couple more. INXS - INXS (1980)

posted by all-musicrecords

INXS is the debut studio album by Australian rock band INXS. It was released on Deluxe Records in Australia on 13 October 1980.
The band recorded the album in midnight to dawn sessions during 1979 to 1980 after performing, on average, two gigs a day at local pubs around Sydney.
All tracks were credited to band members, Garry Gary Beers (bass guitar and double bass); brothers Andrew (keyboards and guitar), Jon (drums, keyboards) and Tim Farriss (lead guitar); Michael Hutchence (lead vocals); and Kirk Pengilly (guitar, saxophone and backing vocals).
The album was co-produced by the band and Duncan McGuire (ex-Ayers Rock). It spawned the single, "Just Keep Walking" (September 1980), which became their first Australian Top 40 hit. INXS peaked in the Top 30 of the related Kent Music Report Albums Chart.  The album did not appear internationally until 1984.

INXS released their first single, "Simple Simon", in May 1980. The single had its debut TV performance on Simon Townsend's Wonder World
Their debut album, INXS, was recorded at Trafalgar Studios in Annandale, Sydney, it was co-produced by the band and Duncan McGuire (ex-Ayers Rock), with all songs attributed to the entire band.
In 1977 INXS had formed with a line-up of Garry Gary Beers (bass guitar and double bass); brothers Andrew (keyboards and guitar), Jon (drums, keyboards) and Tim Farriss (lead guitar); Michael Hutchence (lead vocals); and Kirk Pengilly (guitar, saxophone and backing vocals).

INXS signed with Deluxe Records which gave them a budget of $10,000 to record the album, during 1979 to 1980 they recorded from midnight to dawn, usually after doing one or more performances earlier that night. The album was released by Deluxe on 13 October 1980. Later Hutchence recalled working on INXS:

I'm not a great fan of the first album. It's naïve and kinda cute, almost. It's these young guys struggling for a sound. All I can hear is what was going to happen later and it's probably an interesting album because of that. "Just Keep Walking" was the first time we thought we'd written a song. And that became an anthem around town. It's funny, I remember kids in pubs saying it and hearing it on the radio the first time. We'd never heard that before.

Tim Farriss remarked that the lyric "Shove it, brother / Just keep walking" from the song "sort of summed up our attitude. We took on an 'angry young man' status because we were working our guts out and still starving."

INXS' early records demonstrated their new wave-ska-pop style, and were followed by near constant touring with almost 300 shows during 1981 as the band developed their status as a live act.
Between touring commitments, the band released their third single in May 1981, "The Loved One", which was a cover of a 1966 song by Australian group The Loved Ones
This track was recorded at Studios 301 in Sydney, produced by Richard Clapton,[8] and peaked in the Top 20.

The Coyote Sisters - The Coyote Sisters (1984)

posted by all-musicrecords

American pop-rock female trio formed in 1980. They released a self-titled album in 1984 and achieved a Billboard Hot 100 hit with the single "Straight From The Heart (Into Your Life)", disbanding not long after.
In 2001, Kunkel and Gwinn released a follow-up album as a duo, with Armand's blessing.

Sometime in 1980, Leah Kunkel, Marty Gwinn Townsend, and Renee Armand got together to form The Coyote Sisters, and in 1984 they had this album released by Morocco Records, a Motown subsidiary, containing these tracks: 1) I've Got A Radio; 2) Nobody Moves Like Us; 3) Straight From The Heart (Into Your Life); 4) Floating World; 5) Once You Know; 6) Anybody's Angel; 7) See You Tonight; 8) (Don't Listen To That) Reggae; 9) Echo; 10) I'll Do It. That same year, Morocco released 4 cuts from the album as singles, with Straight From The Heart (Into Your Life) reaching # 16 Adult Contemporary (AC) and # 66 Hot 100 that August b/w Echo on Morocco 1742, and I've Got A Radio peaking at # 39 AC in November b/w I'll Do It on Morocco 1766.
The first self titled album was produced, recorded and mixed at David J. Holman Studio in Laurel Canyon.

But these ladies were anything but unknown newcomers at the time. Leah, the sister of Mama Cass Elliot of The Mamas And The Papas fame, had sung with the likes of Art Garfunkel, Dan Hill, Jackson Browne and James Taylor, and already had two Columbia albums under her belt (Leah Kunkel in 1979, and I Run With Trouble in 1980).
Marty, as one half the duo of Bishop & Gwinn, had the 1979 Infinity LP "This Is Our Night"in addition to her work as a writer of scores for several films and her appearance in Robert Altman's theatre production of Keepin' `Em Off The Streets.
Renee, a much-in-demand studio singer who counts among her greatest influences legendary jazz artists such as John Coltrane, Betty Carter and Carmen McRae, appeared on several cuts by Country singer Hoyt Axton, among others, including his 1974 # 8 Country single Boney Fingers on A&M 1607.
Her lovely voice can also be heard (uncredited) singing The Morning After in the film The Poseidon Adventure, and lip-synced in the movie by Carol Lynley, and two more of her compositions, I Dream Of Highways and I Can't See You Anymore are featured in the films Outlaw Blues (1977) and The Affair (1973).

Each is still quite active today and, in fact, Leah and Marty collaborated on a new album in 2001, again as The Coyote Sisters, but without Renee (who did, nevertheless, do some composing for the effort).
That is also listed in Amazon under the title Women And Other Visions. The trio also appeared as The Coyote Sisters in the 1986 film Doctor Duck's Super Secret All-Purpose Sauce, performing I've Got A Radio. Renee has also turned her many talents to writing poetry and a mystery based in Nashville, in addition to having recorded the album The Rain Book.
