Company Of Wolves - Company Of Wolves (1990)

New York-based hard rockers Company of Wolves released their self-titled debut album in 1990. The band had something of a "hair metal" sound and image, but really didn't have that much in common with Hollywood bands like Poison and Ratt.
Similar to bands like Tangier, Royal Court of China and London Quireboys, Company of Wolves opted for a bluesy, Southern rock-influenced sound. It still had the typical `80s hard rock punch and hook-heavy accessibility, but there was a fair amount of what Junkyard would call "blooze" and swagger. There is also a string Rolling Stones vibe on some of these songs. Leadoff single "Call of the Wild" was a minor hit, and is the album's best song. The boogieing "Romance on the Rocks" is pretty irresistible too, and "Can't Love Ya, Can't Leave Ya" aren't heavy metal in the sense that the music of Motorhead, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Candlemass or Metallica is heavy metal.
Like Def Leppard and Bon Jovi, Company of Wolves knows how to combine loud guitars with a heavy doss of pop gloss; the big difference is that those bands did a much better job. The band manages to come up with a catchy hook on occasion, but for the most part, this album simply lacks the hooks needed for a really effective hard rock session..
