Marriott also brought in backing vocalists Marge Raymond, Dana Kral and Robin Beck, once again looking for a more authenthic and refined R&B sound and feel. Go For The Throat was released by Atco in 1981 and the new version of "Tin Soldier" reached #58 in the US single charts. A promotional tour started but was curtailed after Marriott damaged his hand and shortly afterwards suffered from a duodenal ulcer.
The band toured the album after it had been released. At the beginning of the tour, earlier scheduled appearances by the band were delayed and later Marriott became ill, forcing the cancellation of all further tour dates. Soon afterwards Humble Pie disbanded, after Go For The Throat they were dropped by their record label due to contractual differences.
_Go For the Throat_... that's just what mighty-mite front man Steve Marriott did every single time he sang into the microphone. With his strong, raspy pipes and bluesy, soulful roots, the diminutive Marriott, along with drummer Jerry Shirley, wouldn't let Humble Pie die as the '70s gave way to the '80s.
The group's second LP for Atco carries nine numbers that do the Pie proud, as the band kicks in with a short, but raucous cover of "All Shook Up" and chase the furious two-minute album opener with the raw edged "Teenage Anxiety". The Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott penned "Tin Soldier" adds a soulful bend while "Keep It On The Island" carries a funky edge with back barroom keyboards augmenting the song.
H.P. dip into a Southwestern vibe with the ZZ Top-ish "Driver". Marriott accents the jukin' cut with the mouth harp work. "Restless Blood", writen by Richie Supa, sounds like old school Humble Pie and the title track is driven by a big bottom end. With backing vocals from Maxine Dickson, Robyn Beck and Dana Kral, "Lottie and the Charcoal Queen" once again captures the Pie swingin' in with soul.
The Gary Lyons produced effort from 1981 closes with another Supa number, "Chip Away (the Stone)". Originally laid down by Supa for his _Tall Tales_ album, the song garnered major attention when Aerosmith re-worked the track in 1978. Humble Pie crank out "Chip Away (the Stone)" faster than the cool stop/start riffin' version from the Aero boys, with Marriott's tortured vocals way out in front throughout the five-minute cover.
