John Miles (born John Errington; 23 April 1949 – 5 December 2021) was an English rock singer, guitarist and keyboard player best known for his 1976 top 3 UK hit single "Music", which won an Ivor Novello Award, and his frequent appearances at Night of the Proms.
He won the "Outstanding Musical Achievement" award at the 2017 Progressive Music Awards.
He released 10 albums from 1976 to 1999 and was a touring musician for Tina Turner from 1987 to 2009.The 1982 compilation album "John Miles' Music" (often released as Music) was a welcomed collection for fans, featuring a mix of his earlier hits, including the iconic 1976 track "Music".
It provided a solid overview of his melodic, pop-rock style often produced with Alan Parsons, noted for high-quality production. The album acted as a refresher for fans and a good entry point for new listeners.
Release & Impact: The 1982 compilation, available on vinyl (see Discogs release r12551486 and Discogs release r1998432), was viewed as a "missed opportunity" by some as it lacked new material, yet was appreciated for consolidating popular tracks.
The Title Track: The song "Music," a major hit in the Netherlands (hitting No. 4 again in 1982), is lauded for its dramatic, "Bohemian Rhapsody" style structure, blending ballads with rocking, orchestrated sections.
Artist Profile: John Miles is often described as a massive talent, combining strong vocals with proficient piano and guitar skills, comparable to a mix of Elton John, Brian May, and David Bowie.
Production: Many of these tracks feature polished production by Alan Parsons, with whom Miles collaborated frequently.
Reception: While some of his later work was overlooked, this era of his music is remembered fondly for its high-energy, melodic quality.
